Creating a Personal Connection With Your PC

How many of you love collecting because you have some type of a person connection with the player/team/character that you collect? For myself, it’s the #1 driving force of WHY I collect trading cards as well as the #1 source of Joy that keeps me collecting with a passion!

Right now I have a small side-quest going with a current basketball player. Before I got back into collecting I was obsessed with watching highlights of Dwyane Wade. It’s how I studied the game to become an efficient basketball player as an adult. Flash might be retired, but I find the same joy and passion watching SGA aka Shai-Gilgeous Alexander play! His midrange game is the best in the league and he seems like an amazing teammate. J.J. Reddick called him a “sicko” in regards to his work ethic and attention to detail…it shows on the court with how smooth his game is!

Two months ago I decided to start adding Case Hits of SGA. I wanted to make sure to be very specific with what I added, and I also knew it would to help me build up a stronger bond to the player on the card! So far I’ve not only grown fonder of Shai’s game, but I’ve really had fun trying to find the perfect combination for a card worth adding. Here are the stipulations I’ve followed:

Exciting Player Photo (Bonus Points for Emotion)
Beautiful Design (The more vibrant/shiny the better!)
Case Hit or Rare Odds-Wise (Not a card that shows up on eBay often)

Since I started this small side-quest pc, I’ve found myself looking forward to Panini Basketball releases, seeing if there’s one or two cards I can add that stand out from the majority of what we see on the market. The examples in this blog post highlight a variety of cards that I love looking at time and time again.

I may not be adding many cards to this collection over the next months/year, but I do know that each one will fit within the criteria I’ve set. Having such a deep personal connection to the athlete pictured on the card keeps my Joy at an all-time high for the hobby! Do you have a similar connection to someone you collect?
